PG&E is offering $2/kw rebates when you reduce grid electrical usage during critical times.

Recommended Posts

How it works: It is a simple program at no cost to you, meaning you will only save money and never pay more. If you reduce your energy use from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on select hot summer days when demand for electricity is high, we’ll reward you. Receive a credit on your bill after the program season for helping on days when the California energy grid needs it the most.

We’ll send you an email the day before an event between May 1 and October 31

  • RobertM changed the title to PG&E is offering $2/kw rebates when you reduce grid electrical usage during critical times.

Reminds me of the automated bill Sean got from his Michigan power provider several years back during the summer months.  If I recall correctly, it went something like, "You have not improved your power consumption this month.  Last month: 0kwh.  This month: 0kwh."

Gotta love a computer that writes you up for not being part of the peak usage at all!

I have a small "solar generator" , which could power the essentials, like the refrigerator and evaporative cooler for 5 hours. The maximum credit  would be $120/year.

Oh, and while we're at it, how about mandating electric vehicles too?  That can't possibly cause any problems....

Plus ban the sale of portable generators...

You couldn't make a better plan for failure if you tried to. It's going to be interesting to watch.
On the bright side, in most of the state the weather isn't likely to kill you during an outage...

The forecast high for today is 104°F, but it's a dry heat.

Forest fire alley, i take it? Northern Cali.

Haven't been to California in years. Was planning a trip to lake Tahoe, but Covid blew that trip up, and sadly it's not been very inviting since... Fortunately the airline had to refund me since they cancelled.

I live in the San Joaquin Valley, surrounded by farmland, so there are no local wildfires. We do get terrible smoke blowing in from other places, when there are fires.

My PG&E rebate for going off-grid on 9 hot afternoons last summer came to $45.

This coming summer isn't expected to be as hot, but I wonder if the California grid might always be strained?

Today, I changed all the filters in my reverse osmosis water purifier. This machine will make high mineral well water pure enough to easily run through my evaporative cooler.

I will process at least 11 gallons of well water to yield one gallon of filtered water.
